Core explanation
A by-product is intentionally managed alongside a primary product; a waste is defined partly by the holder and legal context; a secondary feedstock is a functional description after recovery. These labels affect permits, liability, quality assurance and markets. They should not be interchanged merely to make a pathway appear more circular.
The environmental value of diversion depends on the prior fate. Avoiding landfill methane, hazardous treatment or low-efficiency disposal can matter; displacing effective recycling, soil amendment or nutrient recovery can create burdens. The credit is not a property of the material—it belongs to a stated comparison.
Waste-derived systems need traceability and acceptance criteria because contamination and composition can vary abruptly. Sorting, cleaning and separation consume energy and create rejects. A complete inventory follows those rejects and does not allocate all incoming mass to the desired product.
