Core explanation

Primary biological resources include crops, forests, algae and other directly harvested biological material. Residues arise alongside a primary product: straw, pruning, bark or processing residues. Organic wastes include food waste, manure, sewage-derived streams and digestates. Each category has different ownership, collection, moisture, contamination and existing-use conditions.

Secondary carbon extends beyond biomass. Post-consumer plastics, recovered polymers, industrial off-gases and captured carbon dioxide can enter circular-carbon pathways. Industrial by-products may contain carbon, nutrients, metals or useful mineral phases. Alkaline or mineral wastes can be relevant where their reactivity supports carbon storage or process integration, but their composition and contaminants must be characterized.

Taxonomy is useful only when it predicts decisions. Record physical state, source process, legal status, spatial pattern, timing, current fate and plausible alternatives. Two materials both called ‘waste biomass’ may require completely different logistics, safeguards and conversion systems.
